Most popular baby names announced
Olivia and Oliver are the UK’s favourite baby names.
The Office for National Statistics has just announced the most popular baby names for 2016, with Olivia replacing Amelia as the number one name for baby girls.
Amelia had held the top spot since 2011, while Oliver has been number one since 2013.
New additions to the top 10 girls’ names include Lily, which replaced Poppy, while Muhammad replaced William in the boys’ top 10 list.
There were six new entries in the top 100 most popular boys’ names – Albie, Arlo, Ezra, Finn, Jasper and Jesse. For girls, there were four new entries – Felicity, Iris, Luna and Lydia.
Nick Stripe, from the Office for National Statistics, says: With over 696,000 babies born in England and Wales in 2016, and nearly 64,000 different names chosen for them, it’s interesting how relatively stable the top 10 names have been over recently years
“Harper was the girls’ name in the top 100 in 2016 with the biggest rise in popularity over the previous 10 years, whilst for boys it was Jaxon.”
