The Edit

Weaning can be an exciting yet nerve-wracking milestone for all parents – and babies!

TV star and singer Megan McKenna speaks to The Edit on her weaning journey, from the foods Landon loves (and doesn’t!) to future plans for a family cookbook. Plus, Megan shares her Silver Cross highchair must-have, which has helped make mealtimes that bit easier.

Landon struggled with reflux in his early months; how has moving him onto solids helped alleviate his symptoms?

It took a while for his tummy to adjust to the solids. He’s completely weaned off his medicine now which is amazing and day by day his belly is getting better! He loves his food!

How did it feel the first time Landon ate something you made for him? Was it emotional, exciting, or nerve-wracking?

I’ve been more excited than nervous. I love my food, so feeding Landon what I love makes my life! To see his facial expressions after every new bite is the best feeling in the world.

You’ve recently transitioned to baby-led weaning. How are you finding it so far?

I love it and so does Landon. He really prefers to hold his own food and feed himself. We do a mix of led weaning and purees with chunky mixes too, so he’s still getting all the goodness – with baby-led weaning, they don’t actually get a lot of food. A lot ends up in their lap or on the floor!

What are Landon’s favourite foods at the moment – and which ones hasn’t he warmed up to just yet?

His favourites are toast, chicken and carrot. He’s not keen on cucumber and banana at the moment, which is funny because I hate banana too!

You’re using the Silver Cross Gourmet highchair – what do you love the most about it for mealtimes?

I love Gourmet! The seat is so comfy and has a little footrest that he can chill on. Also, I love the clip-on tray, it’s so easy to remove and clean.

Given your passion for cooking, are there any plans in the pipeline to release a baby cookbook?

I’m always writing my recipes down! At the moment I’m concentrating on my ‘Love Gluten Free’ book, but a family cookbook is definitely something on the cards in the future.

Do you plan to get Landon involved in the kitchen as he gets older?

Yes 100%! I think it’s so important to teach your children how to cook and bake. It’s so much fun too.

Is there anything you wish you knew before you started the weaning journey or would have done differently?

No, I love how I’ve weaned Landon. We started with purees early on and then I slowly introduced solids. You just need to trust your baby – we were born to eat, remember that!
