For the best night’s sleep in every trimester
“The slower paced holiday has taught us to truly be present – and we're discovering that adventure comes in all kinds of beautiful new packages.”
Sadie Clayton – artist, mum, and avid traveller – chose the Silver Cross Jet 5 travel stroller for her family adventures. Fresh from her first trip as a family of three, Sadie shares her top tips for travelling with a little one in tow, along with her must-have packing essentials to help make your journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Our first family trip
For our first trip as a family, we started with shorter flights (total sanity-saver!) and flying with a breastfed baby was much smoother than expected. They say the rule is to feed whilst taking off and landing, and our little one handled the journey like a seasoned traveller!
We booked the most gorgeous five-star all-inclusive (for the first time ever!) resort where the food was just divine, and the environment was modern and luxurious. Having a baby doesn’t change your style, aesthetic or needs and expectations of a holiday overnight!
One thing I was paranoid about was medical facilities (first-time mum alert), but knowing there was a doctor on call at our hotel gave us such peace of mind to actually enjoy ourselves. Another of my biggest worries was the baby being in the sun for too long, so I constantly had him lathered in sun cream, covered up and in the shade.
Having an amazing stroller is absolutely life-changing when you're travelling with your little one! Our Silver Cross Jet 5 travel stroller glided like a dream from the cab drop-off at the airport, through to the resort we were staying in.
The resort had these perfect pathways everywhere, meaning it was a smooth and comfortable ride every time for our baby. During the day, Jet 5 transformed from practical transport to the cosiest napping spot, which meant afternoon cocktails by the infinity pool for us, while capturing those precious sleeping baby moments and thinking, “Ah, we made a human!”
Packing essentials: The game-changers
Let me tell you, packing smart for travel with your baby is everything.
Our Jet 5 stroller was hands-down the BEST thing we took. This miracle on wheels folds down to practically nothing, fits in the overhead compartment on the plane and reclines fully so baby can nap while we explore. I literally don't know how people travel without one – it's transformed our holiday experience completely! From beach holidays to city breaks, it’s amazing.
A quality baby carrier was our second lifesaver – perfect for when we wanted to nip somewhere quickly or if the baby needed a nap or break from the heat. The freedom to switch between the carrier and stroller depending on the adventure is absolutely priceless.
Never underestimate the power of extra nappies. We always pack enough for delays plus an extra day – because nothing ruins that beachfront dinner faster than a desperate hunt for nappies in an unfamiliar town! We always nipped to the supermarket close by to buy enough nappies and wipes for the whole holiday. Our foldable changing mat turned any surface into a clean changing station – beach beds, airport benches, you name it.
And my secret weapon? Brand new toys! Revealing a never-before-seen toy during the flight or when restaurant meals are taking forever has saved our sanity countless times. The look of wonder on baby's face exploring something new while we enjoy that sunset cocktail? Absolutely magical!
Keeping your vibrant lifestyle with baby in tow!
Our travel stroller has been an absolute game-changer for maintaining our pre-baby passions. We've discovered that a lot of galleries are baby friendly, so our little one can nap blissfully in the Jet 5 stroller while we soak up some amazing culture.
The best five-star hotels often have other restaurants within the resort, and they offer highchairs even in the fanciest restaurants so you can still be a foodie with a baby in tow.
Booking accommodations near other little towns has been great too – our stroller makes quick trips a breeze without exhausting transfers. And those hotel gyms? Pure gold! A quick workout while baby naps in the stroller beside you means adventure-loving parents still feel like themselves on holiday.
Embracing the new rhythm of family travel
That major shift from being those adventure-seeking globetrotters to first-time parents on holiday is real. We used to pack our itineraries from sunrise through to the night, but our tiny travel companion has completely transformed how we holiday. And honestly, it's been amazing in ways we never expected.
Planning for slower-paced days, or making no plans was initially challenging for us busy-bodies, but it's been so freeing. Instead of racing between attractions, we now savour our morning coffees or enjoy a post-pool tipple on our balcony while baby plays with the room key (his new favourite "toy"!).
Building in downtime for naps seemed like ‘wasted holiday time’ at first, unless napping whilst sunbathing, but these breaks have become precious. While baby snoozes in the Jet 5 stroller, we've rediscovered the joy of having uninterrupted conversations or enjoying guilt-free cocktails. Some of our favourite travel memories now happen during these unexpected pauses.
Being prepared to adapt itineraries is the new superpower we never knew we needed! That sudden nappy blowout that happened before going for dinner? That unexpected early bedtime because baby's overtired? We've learned to laugh and pivot rather than stress about the original plan. Our new mantra is: The best memories happen off-schedule!
The quality family time we experience now touches our hearts in ways summit-reaching never did. Watching our little one feel sand between their toes for the first time or giggle at local wildlife creates soul-filling moments. I love watching my baby make friends at the kids club now he’s a little bit older. Seeing his social skills flourish is joyous.
What has been most unexpectedly magical has been seeing familiar activities through our baby's eyes. That fountain in the town square we'd normally just photograph and pass? Now we spend half an hour there because our baby's face lights up with wonder at the splashing water. Suddenly, the ‘ordinary’ becomes extraordinary through their perspective!
