How long does a baby need to stay in a newborn car seat?

Your baby should stay in a newborn car seat until they are approximately 15 months old or weigh 13kg. Our lie-flat infant carrier, Glide Plus 360, will cocoon your baby in comfort and protection from day one, and thanks to its adjustable inserts, it will provide complete support as they grow.

Do I need a rearward-facing or forward-facing seat?

Newborns should be seated in a rearward-facing car seat to provide the best protection for their head, neck, and spine. When your baby is 15 months old and 76cm in height, they can use a rear or forward facing car seat. We recommend that you keep your child rear facing for as long as possible. Visit our  Car Safety Centre for more guidance on how to choose the right car seat for your child.

Do I need a rearward-facing or forward-facing seat?

Babies should stay in car seats for no more than two hours at a time, even when they’re sleeping. For more information, read our guide – How long can a baby be in a car seat?

What’s the best place in a vehicle to install a car seat?

The safest place to install a car seat is on one of the back seats, ideally in the middle or behind the passenger seat. If there’s no room in the back and your car has ISOFIX points in the front passenger seat, you can fit a car seat in that position, but the airbag MUST be deactivated for rearward facing car seats - if your airbag cannot be deactivated, you cannot install a rear facing car seat. When installing a forward facing car seat in the front, follow your vehicle manufacturer advice for airbag recommendations. You can find this information in the child safety section of your vehicle handbook.

Is it ok to keep using a car seat after an accident?

If you’re involved in a road traffic accident, your car seat must be replaced, even if there is no visible damage. The impact may have caused unseen internal damage, which could stop your car seat from protecting your child correctly in the future. In circumstances where your insurance does not cover your Silver Cross car seat, or the full cost of a replacement, we will provide a like for like replacement free of charge. Discover more information on our Crash Replacement Scheme here. Occasionally, child seats will be safe to continue using after very low impact bumps. Please contact us using the Crash Replacement form if you are unsure if your car seat needs replacing.
